Area 2D – Cornish

Area-2D

Area 2D notes

This small section contains varieties raised in Cornwall but mostly not at Tregrehan, for which there is a separate area, section 9.

‘Burncoose Apple Blossom’ (2D-001) is the same as ‘Burncoose Apple Blossom’ (2D-003) but was labelled simply as ‘Apple Blossom’. There are several varieties originally named ‘Apple Blossom’ so they need to be distinguished from each other.

‘Red Fellow’ (2D-013) is not remotely Cornish, being one of William Ackerman’s hybrids, raised in America for cold hardiness. Ackerman’s picture shows a semi-double flower with central stamens. On this plant the stamens are mostly or entirely petaloid so it looks very different but I think this is consistent with it growing in a cool climate and I believe it is probably true to name.

(2D-006) was labelled ‘Fragrans Comber’. This seems a good match with the (8-011) plant of the same name. It is described in the Register as a white flowered sasanqua, the name a synonym for ‘Fragrans’. It seems likely that ‘Fragrans’ was one of several names invalidly used for C. sasanqua ‘Tago-no-tsuki’. The plant here is neither a sasanqua nor is it fragrant.
