Area 1K – notes

Area 1K is on the south facing slope of the Amphitheatre, so the plants at the front are in full sun. Further up the slope they fall under the shade of very large trees.

‘Bonnie Marie’ (1K-007), shown on the map, died and was replaced in 2020 with ‘Fire Dance’, (1K-043) a small plant that has struggled to get established.

‘Donnan’s Dream’ (1K-013) was hit by a falling tree Jan 2018. Badly damaged but should survive. 2023 update: has recovered well.

‘Feast’s Perfection’ (1K-014) is described as a bicolor; delicate pink with obscure crimson stripes. Most blooms on this plant and the plant at 1F-010 are solid pink but this plant has produced the occasional “correct” flower. It has reverted to its solid pink form.

‘Gladys Wannamaker’ (1K-016) does not seem to be a success here or elsewhere in the collection. The blooms become spoiled and browned almost as soon as the buds start to open.

‘Hawaii’, like ‘Gladys Wannamaker’ does not seem to be a success here or elsewhere in the collection. The blooms become spoiled and browned almost as soon as the buds start to open and often fail to open properly. Later blooms have a better chance.

‘Lammertsii’ (1K-042) replaced ‘Lemon Drop’ (1K-025) which was demolished by a runaway log during arboricultural work.
